A Special Evening with Makana at Honua Kai Resort & Spa

by Chef Nabavi on May 1, 2013

This past weekend Honua Kai Resort & Spa welcomed guests and visitors to an exclusive concert, Makana Live. It was a special evening that highlighted a unique combination of traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music in support of the Hawaiian Islands Land Trust. When I was invited to provide appetizers for this event I felt I could not pass up the opportunity to be part of this very special evening.

Guests enjoyed a mix of appetizers inspired by Cilantro Mexican Grill and Pizza Paradiso Meditterean Grill menus including Fried Plantains with Queso Fresco, Mahi Mahi Ceviche Tostada with Mango Salsa and Gyro bites with Tabouleh and Tahini Sauce.

The highlight of the evening was the performance of virtuoso, Makana. This renowned slack key guitarist, singer and composer incorporates elements of folk, rock, and traditional Hawaiian music to create innovative sounds yet to be established in the music industry. Born and raised on the island of Oahu, Makana began his musical journey at the age of 11. After studying under the Hawaiian slack key legend, Sonny Chillingworth, Makana began playing professionally at age 14. It was truly an honor to be a part of this private concert and fundraiser for an important Hawaii charity.

The Hawaiian Islands Land Trust (HILT) is a non-profit organization committed to working with private landowners, community groups, community leaders and government partners to protect Hawaii’s lands through responsible and development and sustainability.  This collaborative work today helps to prevent inappropriate land use tomorrow and protects our precious land and resources for generations to come.

In support of their efforts to protect Hawaii’s infinite beauty and finite resources, Honua Kai Resort & Spa matched all donations made that evening to Hawaiian Islands Land Trust, up to $1,000.
